How to Plan a Mykonos Trip in 2027: Flights, Ferries, Beds & Budget

Mykonos rewards people who plan. It's a small island, it fills up fast and almost everything — flights, beds, ferries, nights out — gets harder and pricier the longer you wait. None of it is complicated, though: get these six decisions right and the rest of the trip takes care of itself. Here's how to build your 2027 trip from scratch.

1. Book your dates before you book anything else

For high summer 2027, the sensible window to lock things in is the winter and early spring before — roughly from January onwards, and earlier still if you're travelling in a group or over a weekend. Flights to Mykonos climb steeply as the season approaches, and the best-value accommodation disappears long before the flights do. If your dates are flexible, decide them around the night you most want to be out rather than around the cheapest flight: a good week here is built around the nights, not the other way round.

2. Getting there: JMK airport or the ferry

There are two ways onto the island. Mykonos airport (JMK) sits a few minutes' drive from Chora and takes direct seasonal flights from across Europe in summer, plus year-round domestic hops from Athens. The alternative is the ferry: from Piraeus, the main port of Athens, or from Rafina, which is closer to Athens airport and often the smarter choice if you're connecting. Fast ferries make the crossing in a few hours, conventional ones take longer and cost less. Book ferries in advance in July and August — foot passengers and cars both sell out — and give yourself a buffer if you're connecting from a flight, because the meltemi wind can and does disrupt sailings.

3. Where to stay depends on what you came for

If nightlife is the point of the trip, stay in Mykonos Town. Everything happens within walking distance — dinner, sunset, bars, our club on Florou Zouganeli and, crucially, the walk home at 4am without needing a taxi. If you want beach days with the option of a night out, Platis Gialos and Ornos are the balanced choice: sand and restaurants on your doorstep, and a straightforward bus or taxi ride into town when you feel like it. Paraga and the southern coves suit people who want to be by the water first and in town second. Whichever you choose, check how far you'll be from a bus stop before you book — on this island, that detail matters more than the pool photos.

4. A realistic view of the budget

Mykonos is one of the more expensive Greek islands, and pretending otherwise is how trips go wrong. Rather than fixating on a single number, split your budget into blocks: getting there, the bed, the days and the nights. The bed is usually the biggest one and the easiest to influence by booking early. The days are where prices swing wildest — the same afternoon can cost almost nothing at a simple beach taverna or a great deal at a smart stretch of sand. Plan a mix rather than a week of maximum everything, keep some cash on you for taxis and small tavernas, and you'll finish the week without any nasty surprises.

5. Moving around the island

The beach buses are the backbone: they leave Chora from Fabrika square and run to the southern beaches through the day and, in peak season, late into the night on the main routes. The seabus hops between the southern bays and is often the nicest way to move along that coast. Taxis, on the other hand, are famously scarce — there simply aren't many of them for the whole island, and at closing time they're gold dust. Renting a scooter or a small car gives you freedom but comes with its own parking headaches in Chora. The simplest formula: bus and seabus by day, walking distance by night.

6. What to pack (yes, including something white)

Beyond the obvious — swimwear, high-factor sun cream, a hat, comfortable shoes for the marble alleys — pack for two very different halves of the day. Evenings in Chora are smart-casual: beachwear stays on the beach. Bring a light layer for the meltemi wind, which can turn a warm night breezy in minutes. And if your dates include a Saturday, bring something white: The White Party has a white dress code and half the fun is that everybody plays along. A neon or fluorescent piece is worth throwing in too if you'll be around on a Sunday for the Neon Party.
